Ongoing Practice Schedule

Monday Evenings – 6:30 to 8:30 PM, Meditation and Program

  • September 4: Two periods of sitting and walking meditation. Sutra Service.
  • ** September 11: Orientation for those new to MCPS at 5:30pm. Sitting and walking meditation. Serena, Millie, Jessica and Stella share Plum Village songs and stories–families are invited to join and share! There is a slight change in usual format on this day as children may be participating in the evening.
  • September 18: Two periods of sitting and walking meditation. Touching the Earth Service with Elizabeth.
  • September 25: Two periods of sitting and walking meditation. Serena and Jabali: Creating Norms and Discussion Guidelines for our Upcoming Monthly Series //  A Social Justice Perspective on the 5 Mindfulness Trainings. This will continue for a total of 6 Months, the last Monday of each month through February, 2018. (It will be on the 3rd Monday in December, 2017).  Click here to learn more.

Meditation begins promptly at 6:30 pm, so please arrive early to hang  your coat, remove your shoes and find a seat in the meditation hall. Zabuton (mats) and Zafu (cushions) are provided as well as a limited number of Seiza meditation benches. Chairs are also provided for those who can not sit on the floor. Our Monday program begins with two periods of sitting meditation, each followed by walking meditation (one hour total). Meditation is followed by Sutra Service, Community Gathering, Discussion, Guided Total Relaxation, or other Mindfulness Practices. If you arrive early, please stay in the foyer or the kitchen until the small bell is sounded to signal walking meditation. At that point you can join the group.

Second Monday Evenings – 5:30 PM, Orientation 
Newcomers are invited to come early for an orientation of the zendo and our MCPS practice community.

People of Color Meditation Group, 1st and 3rd Sunday Evenings – 6:00 to 8:00 PM

Includes 2 periods of sitting and walking meditation during the first hour, followed by a peer-convened Contemplative Dharma sharing.

Families with Children: Weekend Mornings of Mindfulness.

The aim of this group is to support children and parents to grow in mindfulness together, and there will be a separate program for parents and children. Please Join us! We will start with a song or two, then we will ring a bell and sit for about 5 minutes. Then we will do pebble meditation and walking meditation together. Then the children will go with at least two adults to the park, library, or to the kitchen to make food. Parents will have sitting meditation and Dharma sharing. Kids will come back and join the Dharma sharing. We will end with a mindful snack starting with 5 minutes of quiet, if we can. Then we will finish with a few more songs.

Thursday Mornings – 6:30-8:30 AM, Meditation and Breakfast

The Thursday morning practice is designed to support deepening of our practice in the context of sangha relationships. Meditation begins promptly at 6:30 am, so please arrive by 6:25 to hang up your coat, remove your shoes and find a seat in the meditation hall. We sit in meditation from 6:30 to 6:50 am, then enjoy ten minutes of walking meditation in our lovely outdoor walking meditation garden. Do bring a warm jacket as well as shoes suitable for walking in the garden; we are committed to our weekly garden walk together, which we do whether it is dark, dawn, dry, wet, raining, or snowing. When we return inside to the mediation hall, we conclude with another fifteen minutes of sitting meditation, followed by a brief sutra service in which we typically read a sutra or a selection from a book by Thich Nhat Hanh. We understand that many working people have to leave Dharma Gate by 7:30 in order to get to work on time. However, those who can stay enjoy sharing breakfast together between 7:30 and 8:30 am.  Please bring a breakfast item to share communally, like some fruit, yogurt, muffins or granola. During breakfast we practice sharing our food and eating mindfully. We also engage in Dharma discussion, typically discussing the reading from the Sutra Service and its application to our own situation. We deepen and explore our friendship by discussing the ways our practice has taken root and is being expressed in our lives. This group meets every Thursday, including Thanksgiving and when Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve fall on Thursday. Everyone is welcome, even those who are relatively new to practice.  It is advised that you attend Orientation prior to attending Thursday Morning.

Thursday Morning Yoga: Resumes August 17th, 10:30am. Mindful Gentle Yoga class led by Charlie Heffernan. All are welcome. The class is donation-based and you are encouraged to only pay if your budget allows. Friends from the neighborhood are welcome. Contact Charlie for more info.

Last Saturday Mornings – 8:30 AM- 12:30 PM, Dharma Gate Facility and Garden Work Party 
Members of both sanghas that own the Dharma Gate facility join together from 8:30AM to 12:30PM on the last Saturday of each month to care for and improve our meditation “home”.  Please join us and bring work gloves and clothes.  For more information, contact Ellie Graham or Kay Peters.
