Themes for Days of Mindfulness in 2026 are being developed for monthly offerings on the third weekend of each month. The Day of Mindfulness Committee welcomes your ideas and hopes to offer themes and practices developed from MCPS Affinity groups in 2026. Contact us with your suggestions at dom@mindfulnesspugetsound.org. Themes in 2026 are:

Sunday, July 19 – The MCPS BIPOC Sangha will offer a Day of Mindfulness on the theme of “Friends on the Path: The Practice of Witnessing”.  It is open to all but is an in person only event without a virtual (Zoom) offering.  The Dharma Talks and practices will be inspired by the practices of the BIPOC Sangha and the wisdom of Kate Johnson, the author of Radical Friendship.  https://www.katejohnson.com/book-radical-friendship. Participants are requested to bring an object representing their Ancestors and are requested to commit to joining in the morning and staying for at least half the day if not the entire day.

Saturday, August 15 –MCPS elders in the Five Remembrances Book Study group will offer a hybrid Day of Mindfulness on “Impermanence and the Five Remembrances”.  From 2:30 to 3:45 there will be a ceremony to place a stone in the Dharma Gate Commemorative Area for John Flynn, a long time member of MCPS, who passed away June 9, 2026.

Sunday, September 20 – The Order of Interbeing and Fourteen Mindfulness Trainings offered by local members and aspirants of the Order of Interbeing in collaboration with the Tacoma Sangha.  To see video reciting the 14 Mindfulness Trainings go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NY9rb-RfUjc&t=1230s

Weekend of October 17 and 18th will be a non-residential retreat (NRR) honoring Thich Nhat Hanh (TNH) and Our Indigenous Relatives.  October is the 100th birthday of TNH (October 11, 1926) and is also Indigenous Peoples Month. This NRR will offer a focus on the relationship between the teachings of TNH and indigenous peoples of the Americas as well as guest teachers.   Details of this event are being developed.  Stay tuned!

Sunday, November 15 – “Challenges and Practices Helpful for Young Adults” in today’s world will be the focus of this DOM offered in collaboration with the Wake-Up Cherry Blossom Sangha

Saturday, December 19 – “Solstice Celebration” with Three Treasures Sangha co-owners with MCPS of the Dharma Gate property. This early morning (starts at 6:15am & ends at 10am) event includes sitting in darkness that gradually becomes light.  Participants share poems or readings that relate to Solstice and share a breakfast meal together.

Activities offered will include sitting and walking meditation, a dharma talk and discussion, a mindful noon meal, songs and deep relaxation or gentle movement activities, a mindfulness practice related to the theme, and recitation of the 5 Mindfulness Trainings.  If you come to the in-person DOM, bring a vegan food item to share.
