Dana (Generosity)

It takes time to practice generosity, but being generous is the best use of our time. — Thich Nhat Hanh

The following is an excerpt from Thich Nhat Hanh Foundation: 

Giving (dana) is an essential Buddhist practice. It is about generosity and openness, our capacity to embrace others with our compassion and love. When we truly see ourselves as others and others as ourselves, we naturally want to do everything we can to secure their happiness and well-being, because we know that it is also our own well-being and happiness.

We exist in interbeing with all of life. When we understand this fundamental truth, our acts of giving will be made in the spirit of nondiscrimination. The merit, the spiritual benefit to be gained from the practice of giving cannot be calculated. Helping to create a meditation hall is an offering for everyone, for the continuation of the Dharma. The practice of dana brings a lot of happiness when we know how to do it in the spirit of wisdom, with the understanding of interbeing.

Dana (generosity) Practice
In the Buddhist tradition, the teachings of Dharma teachers are often given freely because they are considered priceless. To reciprocate that generosity, students and lay practitioners also practice dana, or generosity, by making monetary offerings for the teachings. Dana is given from the heart, in whatever amount meaningful to you. Your generosity is a gift that supports not just the teachers, but also the Sangha, the larger Dharma community, and your own practice.

Dana may be dropped off on practice days at Dharma Gate, or checks can be mailed to our PO Box. Please write any checks to MCPS, and note whether you are contributing dana for membership dues, a drop-in practice, or you may specify general donation or a teacher in the memo of your check.
